How common are drinking and smoking?

Explore the ten life stages
How to read these figures
  • NFHS-5 individual interviews here use ages15–49. Household factsheet alcohol/tobacco measures can use ages15+ and proxy responses, so those rates are not interchangeable.
  • Cigarettes and bidis are separate, potentially overlapping products. Do not add them into an all-smoker estimate.

1 Cr = 1,00,00,000 · 1 lakh = 1,00,000. Percentages, years, daily flows and rupees keep their own units. Showing full digits does not increase the source’s precision.

Questions still needing better evidence

At what age do people start drinking or smoking?

Not established in this edition

Current-use prevalence is shown. It does not measure age at first use.

Evidence needed: A verified initiation-age distribution with a clear denominator, including never-users separately.

How to use this number

Do survey alcohol percentages describe all Indians?

No. The retained NFHS-5 indicators refer to self-reported use among the specified male or female survey group aged 15–49. They are not all-age rates, dependence measures or a count of all people who drink.
