What this source tells us

Vital events recorded in the Civil Registration System, with sex and rural/urban breakdowns and registration-based sex ratio at birth.

Keep this distinction

Automatically all births or deaths occurring in India during 2024. Registered totals may reflect registration coverage, delayed registrations and differences in reporting; they are not interchangeable with SRS estimates.

The current official release

This source guide retains its original review context. Selected tables have since been verified; use the dated life-stage records linked below for figures, breakdowns and downloads.

Verified registration figures are now available

CRS 2024 birth and death tables were verified on 16 October 2026 after this guide’s original review. Registered events, SRS-based estimates and daily averages are kept separate.

Reading the data

CRS provides administrative evidence about registered births and deaths. To interpret a total, check whether a table classifies events by occurrence, registration year, or another reporting convention. Delayed registrations can change what an annual total means.

An increase in registered deaths or births can reflect changes in the underlying events, completeness of registration, delays, or reporting. Use the release’s coverage and inclusion notes before calling the change a demographic trend.

  • SRS rates and CRS registered counts are complementary. A registered count is not automatically a count of every event that occurred.
  • For sex ratio at birth, keep the source’s definition and distinguish it from the census sex ratio of the entire population.
