What this source tells us

The causes recorded for medically certified deaths reported through MCCD, and the scope of medical certification within registered deaths.

Keep this distinction

All deaths in India or the disease prevalence of the entire population. Cause shares among medically certified deaths must retain that denominator and should not be described as shares of all national deaths.

Reading the data

MCCD adds cause information to the deaths with medical certification reported by registration authorities. Its scope is narrower than the full set of deaths occurring in the population.

When a cause accounts for a share of MCCD deaths, that denominator must remain visible. Differences in certification, reporting and the places where people die can affect the observed mix of causes.

  • A cause-of-death percentage within medically certified deaths is not automatically a cause share among all deaths in India.
  • Cause-of-death data does not directly measure how many living people have a disease.
