What this source tells us
Survival probabilities and remaining life expectancy at birth and later ages for a hypothetical cohort exposed to the mortality conditions of the reference period.
A prediction of an individual newborn's eventual lifespan, an observed average age at death, or a population headcount.
The current official release
This source guide retains its original review context. Selected tables have since been verified; use the dated life-stage records linked below for figures, breakdowns and downloads.
Verified life-table figures are now available
The 2020–24 life tables were verified on 16 October 2026 after this guide’s original review. Life expectancy at birth and remaining years at 60 retain sex and residence breakdowns.
Reading the data
A period life table applies the mortality conditions of its reference period to a hypothetical group as it ages. Its life expectancy is a statistical summary of those conditions.
Use the age and sex specified by the table. Life expectancy at birth differs from remaining life expectancy at age 60; neither is simply the average age among people who died in that year.
- The five-year reference period is 2020–2024. The catalog lists publication on 18 May 2026.
- Do not describe period life expectancy as a forecast of the eventual lifespan of a particular person.
