Infant mortality rate: definition & source note

India national estimate. Verified through an official government reproduction of SRS 2024, rather than a directly accessible ORGI table. The release date of this supporting press release is 2026-06-07; the underlying ORGI report's catalog publication date is 2026-05-20. This is a mortality rate, not the number of infant deaths.

Official Haryana Health Department press release, 7 June 2026, paragraph beginning ‘According to the SRS 2024 report’; explicitly states 24 per 1,000 live births matches the national average.

Reading the data

SRS produces estimates from a sample system. It is useful for studying vital rates between censuses, while CRS describes events captured in the registration system. Their methods and purposes differ.

The national infant mortality rate reproduced here is 24 deaths before age one per 1,000 live births for 2024. The official Haryana Health Department release explicitly identifies 24 as the national average. We link that accessible government reproduction alongside the underlying ORGI catalog.

  • Keep infant mortality’s denominator: live births. It is not a rate per 1,000 people in the whole population.
  • The report describes 2024. Its publication in May 2026 does not make the rate an observation for 2026.
