What this source tells us

The report records assigned Aadhaar identities and estimates living holders by applying an adjustment for estimated deaths based on RGI death rates. It expresses estimated living holders as a percentage of its projected 2026 population.

Keep this distinction

A person-by-person check of who is alive, a count of citizens physically present in India, or a live population total. Address records, enrolment coverage, eligibility and the projection denominator affect how it should be read.

UIDAI report: projected population denominator: definition & source note

Use this report’s denominator for its penetration ratio. It differs from the national total in MoHFW’s Table 8; no substitution or explanation of that difference is assumed.

Four numbers. Four different meanings.

Assigned

The raw number of Aadhaar identities assigned, based on the address in the record.

Estimated living

UIDAI adjusts the total using estimated deaths based on RGI death rates.

Coverage

Estimated living holders divided by the projected population used in that report.

Transactions

Authentications and updates are events. One holder can create many events.

Aadhaar offers a view of identity-system coverage. It cannot by itself establish how many people live in a place today. Read the original report’s footnotes alongside its headline total.

Reading the data

The estimated living total is about 134.77 crore in the report dated 30 June 2026. It is smaller than the raw assigned total because it uses an estimated-deaths adjustment; it is not a separately enumerated population.

The reported 94.59% penetration uses the denominator printed by UIDAI: 1,424,696,577 projected people. This differs from the national total in the government projection table shown elsewhere on this site. We retain each source’s published value and do not mix their denominators.

Aadhaar updates and authentication transactions reflect activity in the identity system. One person can update or authenticate repeatedly, so those totals cannot be substituted for distinct people.

  • State assignment uses the address recorded in Aadhaar, which need not represent domicile or actual physical location at the reporting instant.
  • Coverage percentages use the report’s projected 2026 population. A percentage above 100 must not be capped or reinterpreted as a measured population growth rate.
  • Current administrative boundaries differ from the site’s historical Census 2011 state profiles. Do not directly join across Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir/Ladakh, or the merged Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu without explicit geographic handling.
  • The published estimated living national total is 1,347,652,046. The displayed state estimates sum to 1,347,652,043, a difference of 3. Values are retained as published; the source does not explain this small discrepancy.
