Keep the classifications distinct

Language, mother tongue, religion, Scheduled Caste status and Scheduled Tribe status are separate characteristics in Census tables. They should not be treated as interchangeable group labels or combined into one category. Choose the table that directly measures the characteristic relevant to your research, then retain its geography and population universe.

Read what each table records

Census 2011 C-16 classifies people by reported mother tongue and published language groupings. A language grouping may bring together several mother tongues. It does not directly measure fluency in another language or the language a person would prefer for an advertisement, form or conversation.

C-01 provides population by religious community. Separate Primary Census Abstract products describe Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe populations and associated characteristics. Those SC and ST tables do not constitute a complete enumeration of every caste category. Use the applicable table notes when comparing places and avoid filling an unreported category with an assumption.

Use aggregate patterns thoughtfully

These tables can support historical research and questions about inclusive information or service access. A language profile may help plan which translations to test; a community profile may identify questions for consultation. Area-level composition cannot establish an individual’s beliefs, language preference, purchasing behaviour or need for a particular service. Ask people directly where an individual decision matters.

Preserve the date and grouping

The observations are from 2011, even when a language paper or catalogue entry was published later. Keep the same official language grouping, territorial definition and table universe in comparisons. A modern district may need a boundary crosswalk before its figures can be compared with a historical district. For current communication planning, complement the census context with recent, purpose-specific evidence and record how it was collected.
