Identify the area before the number
A familiar place name may refer to a district, town, village or neighbourhood, and names can repeat. Start with the state, district and lower-level hierarchy, then record the Census location code and year. The statistical area should match the area in your question. A postal address, electoral ward or everyday neighbourhood name may not map directly to a Census unit.
Choose the detailed source
The Primary Census Abstract provides core population and demographic tables. District Census Handbooks supply more local context: Part A contains the Village and Town Directory, while Part B contains village- and town-wise Primary Census Abstract material. Particular datasets may offer ward-level detail. Availability depends on the table family, geographic product and published file.
Population, housing amenities, education and language do not necessarily share the same smallest published geography. Find the actual table and its universe before promising a local breakdown. This guide points to official source families. PopulationIndia presents selected profiles and metrics, while the original publisher supplies the detailed local files.
Build a reproducible local extract
Record the original file, table number, location code, row label, unit and any exclusion notes. If you combine areas, list the components and check that none overlap. A district total and its villages are different levels of the same hierarchy; adding both would double count. Reconcile your extract with an appropriate published subtotal wherever possible.
Check changes since the census
Districts can be divided, municipal limits expanded and wards redrawn. A current area with the same name may therefore cover different territory from its 2011 counterpart. Use a documented correspondence between old and new areas when one exists. When a boundary cuts across the available source units, state the limitation instead of assigning population by an unsupported assumption. A transparent approximate catchment is more useful than an unexplained exact-looking total.
