| Labour force participation rate, age 15+percent | 55.6 | August 2026, CWS Official source |
All India, rural and urban combined, persons aged 15+. The numerator is people working or seeking or available for work; the denominator is the population in that age group.
Understand what is being counted
Census 2011 B-01 classifies people as main workers, marginal workers and non-workers, with age, sex and specified seeking or availability categories. These are historical Census classifications. A person counted as a worker is not the same unit as a job vacancy, payroll position or business establishment. The non-worker category should not be relabelled as unemployed.
Use PLFS for a newer labour picture
The Periodic Labour Force Survey provides measures of employment and participation under published activity-status definitions. The August 2026 monthly bulletin uses Current Weekly Status, referring to the seven days before each interview. Our selected figures cover people aged 15 and above across rural and urban India. This is a different observation window from the annual usual-status measures.
Labour force participation rate uses people working or seeking or available for work as a share of the eligible population. The worker population ratio uses employed people as a share of that population. Unemployment instead uses the labour force as its denominator. A low unemployment rate alone does not show how much of the whole population is employed.
Choose a measure for the use case
For an employment profile, compare participation and employment as well as unemployment. Retain the same age group, sex, rural or urban coverage and status definition. For a local service or hiring decision, a national rate provides context; it does not establish neighbourhood labour availability, occupations, salaries or the number of people ready to change jobs.
Check changes in the series
PLFS changed its sampling design from January 2025. Read the official comparability notes before connecting observations across that change. Keep Census worker categories separate from PLFS categories in a time series unless you explain the methodological differences. Neither source turns a resident population total directly into a current customer or recruitment pool.
