Visits, not unique people. The compendium table gives 2,948.191 million before rounding to two decimal places.

Approximately 9.95 million arrivals. A person entering multiple times can contribute multiple arrivals; this excludes the separate NRI arrival category.

Count the event named in the table

Tourism statistics often count arrivals or visits. One person can make several trips and appear more than once. Resident population answers how many people belong to a defined population; tourist visits describe activity over a period. Adding annual visits to a resident count does not produce a meaningful population total or the number of people present on an average day.

Choose the right tourism series

The Ministry of Tourism’s India Tourism Data Compendium 2025 brings together several measures. Domestic tourist visits to states and union territories differ from foreign tourist arrivals into India and visits by foreign tourists to individual states. International tourist arrivals also include the separate category of non-resident Indian arrivals, so they are not interchangeable with foreign tourist arrivals.

The headline figures selected here refer to calendar year 2024, despite the compendium’s 2025 publication title. Read the footnotes before comparing states: some domestic-visit entries are estimated and some earlier figures were revised. Domestic tourism includes pilgrimage; the cited Ministry reply does not provide a separate nationwide pilgrim-visit total.

Use activity to investigate a destination

Visitor measures can help identify questions about seasonality, travel origin, purpose and local services. For accommodation or transport research, add evidence on length of stay, overnight demand, occupancy and where visits occur. A large annual state total cannot establish demand for a particular hotel, attraction, neighbourhood or month.

Keep travel decisions current

For a traveller, population and tourism tables provide background on a destination’s scale. They do not predict queues, opening hours, transport availability or present accessibility. For a business, a visit is also not a purchase. Keep the statistical period visible and seek current local evidence for the specific decision. Compare like units across destinations and avoid presenting repeated visits as unique annual travellers.
