A programme, not yet a new population table
Census 2027 combines Houselisting and Housing Census with Population Enumeration. A notified programme, a report of completed fieldwork and a published statistical table are separate kinds of evidence. This guide was checked against official notifications on 14 October 2026.
The next population count will have a different reference date and geographic edition from Census 2011. Until official results are released, existing census counts remain historical and government projections remain projections.
The reference date now depends on the area
The September superseding notification retains 00:00 on 1 March 2027 for most India and 00:00 on 1 October 2026 for Ladakh and designated snow-bound areas. Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and non-snow-bound areas of Uttarakhand use 00:00 on 5 January 2027. A reference moment is not the same as the days of collection. [1]
For the early four-state group, self-enumeration is notified for 16–30 November 2026, Population Enumeration for 1 December 2026–4 January 2027, and the revision round for 5–9 January 2027. Do not substitute an older February-only national summary for that programme. [2]
The designated snow-bound programme set enumeration for 1–30 September 2026 and revision for 1–5 October 2026. Those dates have elapsed, but the calendar alone does not prove operational completion or publication of results. Exact remaining nationwide February daily dates were not verified in this source check. [3]
Houselisting has explicit exceptions
Housing and amenities collection must not be read as a release of population totals. The 5 September notification deferred Manipur houselisting until further declaration; this check did not verify a replacement window. [4]
The 17 September notification extended houselisting in Charaideo and Sivasagar districts of Assam through 31 October 2026. The earlier April–September national window therefore does not establish that every local operation has finished. [5]
The questionnaires are notified
The Houselisting and Housing Census schedule has 33 items and the Population Enumeration schedule has 40. The latter, notified on 14 August 2026, includes caste, digital literacy, work-related travel, migration and fertility particulars. [6][7]
A collection topic is not a promise about a future public table, detail level or release date. PopulationIndia will use published aggregate tables with their definitions; it will not collect personal census responses or identity numbers.
How we will cover the results
The new Census hub has an area-specific schedule, questionnaire guide and a release-by-release coverage plan. Each imported release will retain the original file, table code, publication date, reference period, units and missing/not-stated categories.
Comparisons with 2011 will use documented geographic and category crosswalks where compatible. The historical atlas and original articles will stay available. No upcoming result is fabricated by relabelling a 2011 value.
