What families spend on school and coaching in India
In the April–June 2025 education survey, families reported average school expenditure of ₹2,863 per government-school student and ₹25,002 per non-government-school student during the current academic year. These are household expenditures, not the full resources spent by a school or the government. Coaching was measured separately, so the two spending categories should stay separate on comparisons.

The survey found 27.0% of enrolled school students taking or having taken private coaching during the academic year. Rural and urban results were 25.5% and 30.7%. Among students with school expenditure, household members were the first major funding source for 95.0%. This funding percentage uses the expenditure group, not every child. The changed treatment of anganwadis and coaching prevents a direct spending comparison with NSS 2017–18.
