Official evidence · January–December 2025 survey; 15-day illness/outpatient and 365-day hospitalisation/childbirth recall

Healthcare use, insurance and medical spending in India

The 2025 health survey found 13.1% of people reporting an ailment during the previous 15 days. It also estimated 2.9 hospitalisation instances per 100 people in the preceding 365 days, excluding childbirth. One asks about recent self-reported illness; the other counts admission instances over a much longer window. They cannot be combined into a single rate of people needing care.

Out-of-pocket medical spending per hospitalisation averaged ₹34,064, while its median was ₹11,285. The difference matters when describing a typical case versus aggregate financial burden. Public-facility cases had a mean of ₹6,631 and median of ₹1,100. Retain the facility categories: government-empanelled private hospitals are classified as private. Coverage of a health-financing scheme is a separate person-level measure, not a guarantee of zero expenditure.

Unit: INR per case. Population / universe: NSS Health 2025 survey; hospitalisation cases excluding childbirth / institutional childbirth cases / persons as table label states. Sample survey and self-reported illness; not clinical prevalence. Hospitalisation rate is instances per 100 persons, excluding childbirth, not necessarily distinct people. Expenses are out-of-pocket medical expenditure at survey-period prices, per case, not hospital prices or insurance premium. Private includes government-empanelled private facilities. Mean and median answer different questions and must stay separate. Survey coverage is persons, whereas NFHS household-health-cover indicators use a different denominator.
