Population of Andhra Pradesh


Andhra Pradesh, the fourth largest state by area, is located in Southern India. Hyderabad is the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. Telegu is the official language of Andhra Pradesh and Urdu is the co-official language. Andhra Pradesh is also called as the “Rice Bowl of India”, as more than 3/4th of the crop grown in the state is rice. Andhra is an economic powerhouse, with agriculture and IT being the major contributor to the state’s economy.



As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, key population totals of Andhra Pradesh are below:



Total Population:

The population of Andhra Pradesh as per the 2011 census is 84,665,533 compared to 76,210,007 in the 2001 census. In the decade Andhra Pradesh has registered a growth of 11.10% in total population. Andhra Pradesh makes up 7.00% of the total population of India.



Sex Ratio:

There are a total of 42,509,881 males and 42,155,652 females in Andhra Pradesh. As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio in Andhra Pradesh is 992 compared to 978 in the 2001 census. The child sex ratio for the state too has improved.

Total Child Population:

The total child population (0-6 years) in Andhra Pradesh in 2011 is 8,642,686 compared to 10,171,857 in 2001. There is a dip in child population in 2011 compared to 2001, indicating that growth rate of population may stabilize or decrease in the next decade.



Urban & Rural Population:

About 2/3rd of Andhra Pradesh’s total population lives in rural areas. The rural population makes up 66.51% whereas the urban population makes up 33.49% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 56,311,788 & 28,353,745 respectively.



Population Density:

The total area of Andhra Pradesh is 2,75,045 Km2. As per the 2011 census, population density was 308 persons per Km2, which is lower than the national average of 382 per Km2. As per the 2001 census, population density was calculated at 277 persons per Km2.



Literacy Rate:

Andhra Pradesh has a literacy rate of 67.66%. The male literacy is 75.56% and the female literacy is 59.74%. There is a slight improvement in literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Andhra Pradesh was 60.47 %.

Andhra Pradesh is one the top states in areas in terms of size and contribution to Indian economy. In recent times, the state has been embroiled in the Telengana issue concerning the demand for the separate statehood of Telengana. Due to this issue the state may be divided based on Telegu speaking areas. The issue has long been pending a decision for the same may be announced before the next census planned in 2021.

The Tirumala Venkateswara temple in Tirupati is one the most visited temples in India, with an estimated half a lakh devotees paying their homage every day. Hyderabad, the capital city, is an IT powerhouse and many IT companies, big & small have set their base here providing large scale employment. Andhra Pradesh is the largest producer of Tobacco in India; many top cigarette companies source their tobacco from this state.
