Big Growth in Population in town Around Mumbai

In areas around Mumbai towns like Khargar, Thane, Badlapur, Belabur, Panvel, Kharghar and Kalyan-Dombivili have registered a huge growth in population in the census carried out in 2011. These areas have recorded a rise of 54% over a period of 10 years. This is in Contrast to the Island city Mumbai which has seen a drop in recorded population by 5%, whereas Mumbai’s suburban population has increased by only 8%.
Data Analysis of 2011 census revels that Kharghar tops the growth list between 2001 and 2011, the towns population has increased from a mere 6,000 to 73,000. That is a 1,117 % jump. Other areas like Vasai-Virar, have recorded a rise of 221 %, followed by Panvel at 113 %.
The main reason for this is rising Real Estate Prices in Mumbai. The increase in price has forced many Mumbaikars to look for homes around the city. This trend of people shifting outside the city is expected to continue looking at the shortage of space in the island city.
Development in the form of better infrastructure, connectivity, etc goes hand in hand with booming population. New Industries and white collar jobs are attracting people to satellite towns. At Kharghar, CIDCO is planning to build Affordable housing for an anticipated 4.5 lakh people in the coming decade.
The Population of the Island city Mumbai has reduced because slums in many areas have been cleared, redevelopment of old buildings has slowed down and many old buildings have converted into commercial spaces.
