As per the results of 2011 census the population of Sikkim is 607,688 (6.1 Lakhs). With this Sikkim is least populated state in India. Its population though is higher than the union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and the Lakshadweep islands. Large Areas of Sikkim are restricted to public access; one needs permits from the army to travel to certain areas of Sikkim as this small area is surrounded by three countries namely Nepal, China and Bhutan. Large parts of the state territory are unoccupied and few areas are moderately populated.

The Overall population density of Sikkim is 86 persons per sq km. It has 321659 males and 286027 Females making the sex ratio of the state 889. The literacy rate of Sikkim is estimated at 73.94 %.
