Population of Manipur Census 2011



Manipur is located in the north eastern part of India. Manipur literally means “the land of the jewels”. The capital of the state of Manipur is Imphal. The state shares border with 3 north eastern states namely  Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam along with Myanmar. The official language of Manipur is Meiteilon. Manipur became a state in the year 1972, prior to which it was a union territory. Manipur is one of the most beautiful, yet unexplored state of India.

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, the population totals of Manipur are mentioned below:

Total Population:
The population of Manipur as per the 2011 census is 2,721,756 compared to 2,293,896 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Manipur has registered a growth of 18.65% in total population. The state forms a meagre 0.22% of the total population of India.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 1,369,764 males and 1,351,992 females in Manipur. As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio in Manipur stands at 987 compared to 978 in the 2001 census.  Manipur has the highest sex ratio out of all the North eastern states. As mentioned in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the state has dipped slightly compared to 2001.

Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) in Manipur in 2011 is 353,237 compared to 326,366 in 2001. There has been a slight increase in child population when compared to the child population in 2001.

Urban & Rural Population:
Close to 2/3rd of the population of Manipur resides in rural areas. The rural population makes up 69.79% whereas the urban population makes up 30.21% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 1,899,624 & 822,132 respectively. The urban population has increased by 42.74% over the previous decade, whereas the rural population has increased by 10.58%.

Population Density:
The total area of Manipur is 22,327 Km2. As per the 2011 census, population density is calculated at 122 persons per Km2, which is very low when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. The state has among the lowest population density in the country. As per the 2001 census population density was calculated at 103 persons per Km2 which shows that there has been an increase of close to 18% in population density over the last decade.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Manipur has a literacy rate of 79.85%. The male literacy is 86.49% where as the female literacy is 73.17%. There is an improvement in literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Manipur was 70.53%.
