Population of Meghalaya

The Indian state of ‘Meghalaya’ meaning ‘abode of clouds’ reflects the salubrity of its climate. The wettest places in the world are also located here. The State has an area of 22429 sq. km. and is located between 24°57’ and 26°10’ North latitudes and 89°46’ and 92°53’ East longitudes. The temperature varies from 2°C to 35°C depending upon the altitude which varies in hills from 300 m to 2000 m above mean sea level. It has predominantly hilly terrain with foothills as plains and flood-prone areas.

The capital of Meghalaya, Shillong is located at an altitude of 1496 meters above mean sea level. The population of Meghalaya is predominantly tribal, the main tribes are the Khasis, the Jaintias and the Garos besides other plain tribes such as Koch, Rabhas and Bodos etc.

As per the Census carried out by Government of India in 2011, Meghalaya has an estimate population of 2,964,007 individuals, an increase from figure of 23.19 Lakh in 2001 census. Of which 1,492,668 are males and 1,492,668 are females . Sex Ratio of Meghalaya is 986 i.e. for each 1000 male, which is below national average of 940 as per census 2011. In 2001, the sex ratio of female was 975 per 1000 males in Meghalaya.
The sex ratio has risen up both at State and District levels and the highest rise is noticed in East Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills.

The total population growth in this decade was 27.82 percent while in previous decade it was 29.94 percent. The population of Meghalaya forms 0.24 percent of India's total population in 2011. In 2001, the figure was 0.23 percent. The highest decadal growth rate is noticed in the Ri Bhoi district with 34.02 per cent followed by Jaintia Hills district with 31.34 per cent and the lowest is noticed in East Khasi Hills with 24.68 per cent.

Literacy rate in Meghalaya has seen upward trend and is 75.48 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 77.17 percent while female literacy is at 73.78 percent. In 2001, literacy rate in Meghalaya stood at 62.56 percent of which male and female were 71.18 percent and 50.43 percent literate respectively.


Total area of Meghalaya is 22,429 sq. km. Density of Meghalaya is 132 per sq km which is lower than national average 382 per sq km. In 2001, density of Meghalaya was 103 per sq km.

The child population in the 0-6 age-group was 5,55,822 in 2011 out of total population 29,64,007 of the state.the proportion of the child population in the 0-6 age group to the total population in Meghalaya has fallen to 18.75 per cent in 2011 from 20.18 per cent in 2001. The males too have come down to 18.91 per cent in 2011 from 20.17 per cent in 2001 and the females to 18.60 per cent in 2011 from 20.19 per cent in 2001.

Himachal Pradesh is a state in the Northern India. The state has 49 towns and cities, of which Naina Devi is the smallest town and Shimla, its capital is the largest. The official language is Hindi. Locals in the state also use the Pahari language. The state of Himachal was called ‘Deva Bhoomi’ meaning the land of the gods.

As per the census carried out by the government of india in 2011 the total population of Himachal Pradesh is 68,56,509 compared to 60,77,900 in the 2001 census. The state has registered a population growth of 12.81% over the last decade. It is the 21st most populated state in India. The population of Himachal Pradesh constitutes 0.57% of the total population of India.

In 2011, the total number of males were 34,73,892 and total number of females were 33,82,617 thus the sex ratio of Himachal Pradesh stood at 974 compared to 970 in the 2001 census.

The urban population is 688,704 and the rural population is 6,167,805. The urban population makes up 10.04 % whereas the rural population makes up 89.96 % of the total population. The total child population (0-6 years) in Himachal Pradesh in 2011 is 763,864 compared to 793,137 in 2001.

The population of Chhattisgarh as per the 2011 census is 25,540,196 compared to 20,833,803 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Chhattisgarh has registered a growth of 22.59% in total population. Chhattisgarh accounts for a mere 2.41% of India’s total population.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 12,827,915 males and 12,712,281 females in Chhattisgarh. As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio of Chhattisgarh stands at 991 compared to 990 in the 2001 census. The state has one the best sex ratios in the country. As mentioned in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the state has significantly improved compared to 2001.

The total child population (0-6 years) of Chhattisgarh in 2011 is 35,84,028 compared to 35,54,91 in 2001. The growth rate of child population has remained flat over the decade. This is an indication that the population of the state may stabilize in the next decade.

Urban & Rural Population:
Majority of the people, close to 3/4th of the total population of Chhattisgarh live in rural areas. The rural population makes up 76.76% whereas the urban population makes up 23.24% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 19,603,658 & 5,936,538 respectively.

Population Density:
The total area of Chhattisgarh is 135,191 Km2. As per the 2011 census, population density is calculated at 189 persons per Km2, which is considerably lower when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. In 2001 the population density was calculated at 154 persons per Km2 which shows that there has been an increase of about 22.7% in over the last decade.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Chhattisgarh has a literacy rate of 71.04%. The male literacy is 81.45% where as the female literacy is 60.59% only. There is a minor improvement in overall literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Chhattisgarh was 64.66%.
