Population of Jharkhand 2011 census


Jharkhand is located in the Eastern part of India. The state was formed in the year 2000 from the southern part of Bihar state. The capital of the state of Jharkhand is Ranchi. Jamshedpur is the most industrialized city in Jharkhand. Hindi is most widely used language in Jharkhand.

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, the population totals of Jharkhand are mentioned below:

Total Population:
The population of Jharkhand as per the 2011 census is 32,966,238 compared to 26,945,829 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Jharkhand has registered a growth of 22.34% in total population. Jharkhand accounts for 2.72% of the total population of India. Jharkhand is the 13th most populated state in the country, but is among one of the smaller states in terms of area.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 16,931,688 males and 16,034,550 females in Jharkhand. As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio in Jharkhand stands at 947 compared to 941 in the 2001 census. As mentioned in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the state has dipped slightly compared to 2001. The states sex ratio is very close to the national average.

Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) in Jharkhand in 2011 is 5,237,582 compared to 4,956,827 in 2001. This has been a notable growth in child population when compared to the child population in 2001.

Urban & Rural Population:
A good 3 quarter of the population of Jharkhand resides in rural areas. The rural population makes up 75.95% whereas the urban population makes up 24.05% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 25,036,946 & 7,929,292 respectively. There has been an increase of 32.29% in urban population over the last decade.

Population Density:
The total area of Jharkhand is 79,714 Km2. As per the 2011 census, population density is calculated at 414 persons per Km2, which is extremely higher when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. As per the 2001 census population density was calculated at 338 persons per Km2 which shows that there has been an increase of close to 22% in population density over the last decade.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Jharkhand has a literacy rate of 67.63 %. The male literacy is 78.45 % where as the female literacy is 56.21 %. There is a notable improvement in literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Jharkhand was 53.56 %. Also the female literacy rate in 2001 was an appalling 38.87% which has now improved somewhat.
