Population of Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh state is located in Central India. Chhattisgarh was formed on 1st of November 2000 by including the south eastern regions of Madhya Pradesh. The capital of Chhattisgarh is Raipur.The main language spoken in the state is Chhattisgarhi. It is a state with abundant mineral resources.The state shares its boundary with the states of Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh & Odisha.

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, the population totals of Chhattisgarh are mentioned below:

Total Population:
The population of Chhattisgarh as per the 2011 census is 25,540,196 compared to 20,833,803 in the 2001 census. In this decade the state of Chhattisgarh has registered a growth of 22.59% in total population. Chhattisgarh accounts for a mere 2.41% of India’s total population.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 12,827,915 males and 12,712,281 females in Chhattisgarh. As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio of Chhattisgarh stands at 991 compared to 990 in the 2001 census. The state has one the best sex ratios in the country. As mentioned in the table below, the Child sex ratio for the state has significantly improved compared to 2001.

Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) of Chhattisgarh in 2011 is 35,84,028 compared to 35,54,91 in 2001. The growth rate of child population has remained flat over the decade. This is an indication that the population of the state may stabilize in the next decade.

Urban & Rural Population:
Majority of the people, close to 3/4th of the total population of Chhattisgarh live in rural areas. The rural population makes up 76.76% whereas the urban population makes up 23.24% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 19,603,658 & 5,936,538 respectively.

Population Density:
The total area of Chhattisgarh is 135,191 Km2. As per the 2011 census, population density is calculated at 189 persons per Km2, which is considerably lower when compared to the national average of 382 per Km2. In 2001 the population density was calculated at 154 persons per Km2 which shows that there has been an increase of about 22.7% in over the last decade.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census study of 2011, Chhattisgarh has a literacy rate of 71.04%. The male literacy is 81.45% where as the female literacy is 60.59% only. There is a minor improvement in overall literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Chhattisgarh was 64.66%.
