Population of Assam

Assam is a state in the north-eastern part of India. Dispur is the capital city of Assam. The state shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Assam is famous for its tea and has a large number of tea plantations across the state. Assamese, Bodo & Karbi are the languages spoken in Assam. In all there are 27 districts in the state of Assam.

As per the census carried out by the government of India in 2011, key population totals of Assam are below:

Total Population:
The population of Assam as per the 2011 census is 31,169,272 compared to 26,655,528 in the 2001 census. . In this decade the state of Assam has registered a growth of 16.93% in total population. Assam accounts for 2.58% of the total population of India.

Sex Ratio:
There are a total of 15,954,927 males and 15,214,345 females in Assam.As per the 2011 census, the sex ratio in Assam is 954 compared to 932 in the 2001 census. As mentioned in the table below, the child sex ratio for the state has increased significantly compared to 2001.

Total Child Population:
The total child population (0-6 years) in Assam in 2011 is 4,511,307 compared to 4,498,075 in 2001. There is a slight growth in the child population over the previous decade.

Urban & Rural Population:
The rural population makes up 85.92% whereas the urban population makes up 14.08% of the total population. The total rural & urban population as per the 2011 census is 26,780,516 & 4,388,756 respectively

Population Density:
The total area of Assam is 78,438 Km2. In 2011 population density of Assam was 397 persons per Km2, which is slightly higher than the national average of 382 per Km2. In 2001 the population density was 340 persons per Km2.

Literacy Rate:
As per the census of 2011, Assam has a literacy rate of 73.18%. The male literacy is 78.81% and the female literacy is 67.27%. There is a significant improvement in literacy rate as compared to 2001 when the literacy rate in Assam was 63.25 %.

The tea gardens of Assam are famous and attract tourists and tea lovers worldwide.
